Global Search Not Returning Expected Results

I am on TB 146.0.1.

I recently noticed that some items seemed to be missing from global search results so I ventured to rebuild the GLODA index.

The first few times, it seemed to get stuck on specific IMAP sent folders. I repaired the folders and eventually, the index completed to full success. It is about 2.5 GB.

It still doesn't seem like some searches are working correctly, but maybe there is an explanation. Most of my email other than IMAP sent emails is stored in my Local Archives.

Using the term "klinghardt" for example, global search shows only results from 2025, a total of 992 items, and does shows some from both IMAP and Local Archives. From Local Archives, it shows 255 items in the "From Visitors 2016" folder. It does not go back prior to 2025.

However, there are many earlier emails in that folder before 2025 with the same term.

Using the term "klinghardt education" does show messages back to 2017 and a total of 524 of them in the "From Visitors 2016" folder. Why would using just "klinghardt" show less than "klinghardt education"?

The "From Visitors 2016" folder has almost 140K messages from about 10 years.

If I go "From Visitors 2016" folder and do Search Messages with the same "klinghardt" term on subject alone, I get 982 returned messages that go back to 2015. I believe this is not using GLODA but am not certain.

If I go to Quick Filter on Sender, Recipients, Subject, I get 1251 items going back to 2015.

If I see messages over many years with Search Messages and Quick Filter, why do I only see messages from 2025 when I use the global search?

To make things a bit more complex, there is also a "From Visitors" folder in Local Archives that has hundreds more with terms from 2011-2015 that don't seem to show up in the global search results at all with either of the above. If I use "klinghardt academy" though, some results do come back from the "From Visitors" folder. Total of 32K messages in the From Visitors folder.

I have already tried many options from the documentation and suggested by ChatGPT but am hesitant to do anything that could not be reversible.

At this point, I am unclear on what here is a problem vs. an explainable behavior.

I would be grateful or any thoughts or next steps you might suggest.

Hi all - I'm running Thunderbird (14.05) on a desktop Mac running Sequoia 15.7.2

In my Local Folders, I have sub folders which in turn have a large number of subfolders. All of those sub folders are automatically listed alphabetically as they're created. In the last couple days, a fairly random selection of six folders from topline folders, sub folders and subsub folders have been shifted to the end of the alphabetized list and I have absolutely no idea why. I can manually move them back no problem, but I'd really like to stop it happening again! Also, I've tried clicking on the topline folder and choosing to sort by subject, but it changes nothing. Even renaming an mis-listed folder to a new name does not make it move to its correct place in the alphabet. Any ideas? Thanks

Recently, I have experienced an erroneous browser launch, simply by clicking on the title of the message in the list pane. This problem seems to occur when clicking on emails from a particular UK supermarket (tesco.com) and the web page opened has a long and complicated URL, but the page contains only a single pixel which shows up as a white dot on a black background.

Obviously, it is likely that there is something strange about that source, but the problem doesn't occur if I click on the same email in a different email client (in this case Evolution).

I have tried various Settings as advised by web searches and also the solutions suggested in Thunderbird Help (Troubleshooting Mode and Troubleshooting Information).

I am running Thunderbird 140.5.0esr (64-bit) on Kubuntu Linux 24.04.

This has happened to me twice now. I do not delete emails from purchases until the item is received. I leave it in my inbox and often will mark it unread. I went into it yesterday to check to see when I should receive a certain item and the email is gone. I have looked in all folders (spam, trash, archive, all mail) and it is not there. I blamed G-mail originally but now wonder if it is Thunderbird and if there is some way to retrieve it. Is there a defunct setting somewhere that I do not know about or understand? I have plenty of storage. Can someone answer this for me?

I have pretty fast internet, wired at 1G, so usually my mail appears almost immediately. In the last week or so it has slowed down dramatically, sometimes requiring multiple login attempts. I've always experience occasional TB crashes. According to my log history there was 1 in July, 3 in Aug, 2 in Sep, 2 in Oct, and 6 in Nov. I never really paid attention since the reboot was quick. But now in December I am losing work and it is a major problem. I've had 30 crashes in Dec and 21 in the past week. I have only 3 add ons and they have not changed, and a Copernic connector. I disable the Copernic connector and it didn't help. I have the same 140.6 on my Surface Go with the same add ons, except for Copernic and it runs fine. On both PCs I use Malewarebytes and WinDef. I have put exclusions for them in their setups. Even with MBAM completely disabled I've still had crashes.

I cleared the Cache and no help. I've even had occasional crashes in Troubleshooting mode. Here are my last 5 crash IDs

Interestingly I’m also experiencing crashes with Firefox, especially ChatGPT. I cleared the ChatGPT history and that helped but did not solve the problem. I cleared the Firefox cache and in troubleshoot mode still have issues.

Otherwise my win11 PC seems to be working fine. I’ve run chkdsk and all is ok. Also scannow is ok.

Is my next step a profile rebuild?

I guess I have to forget thunderbird. It is a shame.

I use a private email server (mail.ragan.us. I have set up Thunderbird on Linux Mint 22 with the same email server settings I use on Outlook in Win 10 and Apple Mail on IOS 26 which both work fine. I created the account in Thunderbird and it showed success. When I try to get mail for gary@ragan.us,Thunderbird shows connected to mail.ragan.us, but will not download mail from that server. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Perform a Global Search (ctrl + K). Search for any string. Just make sure there is at least one search result. > Click "Show results as list". > Right-click on the search result in the Message List Pane. (Please see the footnote.) > The pop-up context menu has two problems:

(1) There are redundant dividers. (Please see the first attached image.)

(2) Hover the mouse over "Tag". The pop-up submenu of "Tag" is incomplete. The menu includes "New Tag" and "Manage Tags". However, "Remove All Tags", "Important", "Work", "Personal", "To Do" and "Later" are missing. (Please see the second attached image.)

These problems (redundant dividers and incomplete submenu) also occur in Troubleshoot Mode.

These problems only occur after using Global Search and clicking "Show results as list".

If I right-click a message in the Message List Pane of a regular folder (such as the "Inbox" folder or "Templates" folder), the pop-up context menu displays correctly: There are no redundant dividers, and the submenu of "Tag" is complete. (Please see the third attached image.)

Operating system: Windows 10.

Versions of Thunderbird: 140.3.1esr (32-bit) and 140.6.0esr (32-bit). Previously I was using 140.3.1esr (32-bit), and currently I am using 140.6.0esr (32-bit). Both versions have the same problems.
